about

The Bel-Aires live at the Bellevue Hotel 1982

You couldn’t move. You could dance as long as it was dancing up and down on the spot.
Hot. Sweaty. Free chips and nuts on the bar and the air-con turned off so, inevitably, the beer kept flowing.
Wednesday night was Bel-Aires night.
Volume? Not an issue. Patrons grabbing a mike and joining in? Not a problem (up to a point). Songs played at breakneck speed? Of course.

This first incarnation of the Bel-Aires was Glenn Cardier (singer-songwriter, electric 12 string guitar), Brad Alick (lead guitar), Vinnie Crea (drums) and Paul Read (bass). The songs were Cardier’s. The sound was surf, Byrds, rockabilly chucked in the blender and poured down the throat of Oz Pub Rock.

Despite being recorded to cassette at the gig, this track captures the energy and passion of this fine Sydney band.

lyrics

I Saved Annette From Drowning
(Cardier)

Well, I saved Annette from drowning late one afternoon -
Oh yes, I just heard the sound of someone calling -
All the beaches were deserted, I thought I was alone
But I saw footprints in the sand where I was walking.

Well, I saved Annette from drowning and I reached her just in time
Oh, around about us all the waves came crashing -
And it left us both so breathless as we made it to the shore
Oh, the sea was dark and seemed like it was laughing.

And sometimes, I think about it just like it was yesterday -
And sometimes, it seems like I was only dreamin’ it -
And you see it all so clearly and then it fades away
But I still hear the way Annette said, ‘Hey! We’re makin’ it,
Makin’ it!’

Well, I saved Annette from drowning, I said, ‘Swim between the flags.’
Oh she said, ‘Hey, let’s forget our obligations.’
By the shoreline, we were standing late one afternoon -
Oh, it felt just like the first day of vacation.

about

Glenn Cardier Sydney, Australia

Post 2000, Glenn Cardier’s re-emergence as a songwriter/performer of real distinction has been nothing short of extraordinary. In typical single-minded fashion, he writes, performs and produces his music. Onstage, there are the trademark flashes of dark humour and thumping rockabilly/blues. But underlying it all are the songs. Happy/sad songs. Sweet/crazy songs. Cardier songs. CDs on the website. ... more
